Ancient Egypt


Ancient Egypt lies east of Libya and west of Israel. This is where the earliest civilization begun.


The River Nile
The River Nile is 6,670km in length. It is the longest river in the world. The Nile flows into the Mediterranean Sea. Without the River Nile this civilization wouldn't exist. The River Nile was great for food. It provided fish and sustainable to grow crops. The River was good for travelling from place to place. Along side of the Nile was the papyrus reeds. These reeds were made into paper. The name Nile comes from the Greek word ‘nelios’, which means valley.



Mummification
Mummification is a process which a very important person such as the pharaoh, gets mummified. Ancient Egyptians believed in the dead. First all the organs were removed, all exempt the heart. Next the body was salted and dried. After that, cloth was stuffed inside the body to maintain it’s shape. Then the body was oiled. Lots of bandages was wrapped tightly around the body. The embalmers used cloth because to stop the body from rotting away. A priest always supervised this mummification process. The priest touched the body with special instruments. Afterwards, the body was placed in a coffin, some were wooden others were decorated. But an important person such as the pharaoh was placed in a stone coffin.


Contribution to time
The Egyptians noted that the rising of certain stars, such as Sirius and Orion, matched the first day of the 36 decades and called these stars decans. During any one night, a sequence of twelve decans would be seen to rise and were used to count the hours. It is the Ancient Egyptians who first divided the day 24 hours.




Jobs
There were many jobs in Ancient Egypt. A priest, scribe, Pharaoh, farmer, craftsmen were the most  popular jobs. A pharaoh is the ruler of all Egypt, his job was to please the gods so good fortune would get to Egypt. A scribe is a person who reads and writes for the Pharaoh. And a farmer is a grows crops.
