Ernest Rutherford

Weight it up

Walt: solve the questions.

I am learning mass. I have to make the two sides balance. One square is equal to three circles. So what I did was, multiply three and three. Which makes nine. What I would like to learn do next do more complex work.

Now doing this problem. This was problem was complex!. This messed with my mind a bit. But having to think of it over and over again, I got the hang of it. Squares to circles was easy, but circles to squares is difficult. Sorry Mrs., I misjudged this game!

Mass

Walt: solve the question.

I am learning mass. Mass is weight. This game is simple! I just need more challenging work to do. What I would like to learn do next is do more complex work.

The written word

Walt: look for information
Ancient Egyptian: The Written Word

Hieroglyphics
1. The word hieroglyphics means ‘Sacred carving’ in Greek.

2.The Early rulers of Egypt couldn’t read or write. So they depended on their scribes to read and write for them.

3. Numbers in hieroglyphs were later developed to calculate mathematical problems.

4. Hieroglyphics is mainly written in pictures or symbols.

5. Only 1% of the ancient egyptian population could read or write.

Scribes
1. The scribes’ main tool is called kalamos. This tool was made from six inch reed.

2. Ancient scribes used many colour inks from plants and minerals.

3. The scribes wrote while standing or kneeling. It wasn’t until 2000 BC that the scribes used the desks.

Papyrus
1. Papyrus was the first example of paper the scribes used instead of clay tablets. The clay was hard to transport and hard to write.

2. The papyrus was dated from 3000 BC, about the Egyptians began to write.

3. In  Egyptian, papyrus meant ‘Property of Pharaoh’.

Fireworks incident

Walt: 1. write a narrative.
           2. Use words to paint the picture.
           3. Use senses.

My life! How’s my life you asked? My life is very spectacular thank you, very much. Well just to sum it all up, I have it all! I have a nice job, a lovely family and everythings so perfect. But my whole life wasn't all that perfect. When I was a child, my life wasn’t all that luscious. In fact, my family was very poor. I had three brothers and one sister. So there was the seven of us all living under a horrible environment and  unhealthy conditions. My mum was the best! She tried to give my siblings and myself everything we needed. My father on the other hand, was an alcoholic and was addicted to smoking. My mum and father didn’t get along, sometimes at night I heard them two fighting, smashing glass and throwing the chairs around. One day my father went too far.

So it was a very miserable day. The clouds cried their eyes out. I couldn’t help but cry as well. I knew today was Guy Fawkes day and it’s going to be one of my dads’ ‘Finest hour’. Year after year, dad will have a couple of beers too much and do something crazy and wacky. I was inside my house when suddenly I see a little ball of light heading towards me and the house. BOOOM! I was knocked out unconscious. All I could hear were screams, arguments and crys. The smell of smoke slowly lingered into my nostrils. I shot straight up and realised that there was a fire. The flames were licking the walls.

I tried to escape but  my leg stuck under some debris. I constantly pulled my leg to give it freedom, it just wouldn’t budge. Not one single centimetre. The smoke filled my lungs. My heart pumped louder, Lub Dub Lub Dub.
“HELP!”, I wailed. Creating teardrops in my eyes. I guess I’m going to die, I thought. The flames were everywhere. It was closing in. Now it was heading for me. Just when I thought I was a goner, suddenly I got sight of my brother. He turned up by my side in a flash. I couldn’t remember much, I think I just fell asleep.

When I woke up, I was in a hospital. My father was by my side, weeping.
“I’m so sorry, Kiddo, this was all my fault”, he wept.
“I was the one who pointed directly at the house and fired the firework”, he said teardrops falling on his face. “Let me guess”, I shot a look at him. He ashamedly, nodded.
“I will go to rehab, and get myself sorted out, I don’t want this ever happen again to my children”, he left. Twelve months later, my dad came into house. He looked different. He had flash clothing and nice hairstyle. My dad walked out a addict and came back a man.

Five easy steps

Walt: write a poem with rhyme.
Halloween

Five easy steps to be as scary as possible

Step 1:
Rip some clothes, for your terrifying costumes.

Step 2:
Apply fake blood wherever on the outside of your body.

Step 3:
Put on some prosthetic for scars or open cuts, it’s optional. Only put some if you dare to.

Step 4:
Practise a scary growl. Make sure to perfect it, so you can get more candy. And the more candy you get , the more happier you’re going to be.

Step 5:
Last but not least add a little red bow on top to show that it’s finish. Again, optional it’s only if you’re fancy enough.

Make sure that your finished product is a terrifying figure with a bloody body and a growling, great of a friend.

Obviously, this figure is YOU!

Math apocalypse

Walt: solve the problems.

This game is very tricky. When you first play it, it starts off easy peasy lemon queasy. But after going through level after level, it gets more difficult at the minute. What I would like to learn is that to multiply two digits mentally.

Pose, pose, pose

The right decision

Walt: write a narrative.

Pressure, I tried to persuade my mum. Forced, I still don’t want to go but mum commanded me to get in the car. Embarrassed, Mum kisses me on the forehead as she says goodbye. Laughing, is all I hear as I strolled up the steps and into the hallway. Bell rings as I head into a room with rows and rows of desks and a large desk in front of a green chalkboard, with bits of scribbles on it.
“Hey, look you guys, it’s that boy that got a kiss from his mum”, said a guy with a shiny leather jacket with a bright green eyes.
Everyone laughed. I turned red, red as an apple. I sank on a chair.

After recess, I walked to the cafeteria. I quickly got my lunch and sat on a bench by myself. I flipped upon my head, trying to block the embarrassment away. At the corner of my eye, I saw a group that luscious hair, stunning clothes and especially handsome faces. I sat up, and stared at them. I recognised one of them. The guy in the leather jacket teased me in class. I became extremely jealous of their attractiveness, that I immediately walked up to them. “ Hi, I was wondering if I could, like join your group”, I stuttered. They all give me a face. I know that face, it meant, “ Hell no now get out of my face”. I turned and slowly walked to my lonely bench and ate.

After school, I turned to an alley and saw that exact same group, but this time they were smoking. “Why are you guys smoking?, I asked softly. One of them stood upright, and puffed out a bit of smoke on my face. I coughed. “That’s our thing, little man”, he said with a another puff of smoke on my face. A light bulb switched on. I know I will just smoke like them, then I will become one of them.

So the next day, I stole a cigarette from my mum’s drawers. I hurried outside. I hid behind a shed. I got the lighter from my right pocket and lit my cigarette. I inhaled my first smoke. It tasted burned and went the wrong way down my throat. I immediately threw the cigarette away. I coughed and coughed.
Two minutes later, I heard crackling noises, and screams. I turned around and saw that my house was on fire. I tried to find an exit to the front of the house but it was either on fire or burned. I panicked. This was all my fault. The sound of the fire fighter sirens deafened my ears. If I didn’t smoke in the first place, this would’ve never happened.

When the fire brigade finished, the smell was similar to burnt toast. I felt guilty. Mum walked with a disappointed face towards me. I felt her glaring at me, like a hawk very hungry hawk.

Big daddy

Walt: write a paragraph on the character.

Big daddy

Big daddy has a reputation of being big and tough but after witnessing him crying up on the flying fox I think not. Even though that he’s big on the outside really he’s actually squirmy on the inside. Big daddy was afraid of heights, I know this because he was refusing to go down the flying fox by himself. Big daddy doesn't like to be embarrassed. The evidence is that when Big daddy and Philip went down the flying fox and when the children ask why they took so long, he just ignored them and walked away.

Inspirational person

Walt: use our research to write an essay on an inspirational person

My inspirational person is Ernest Rutherford. His father, James Rutherford and the mother, Martha Rutherford were originally from Horn church Essex, England.  He is a physicist and chemist,  A physicist is a person who studies physics and a chemist is a person who is an expert on chemistry.

I know that you would be thinking ‘oh no not another boring lecture of just some other British dude who accomplishes something you won’t ever accomplish. I wouldn't bet on that. Ernest was born and raised in New Zealand. Nelson, Fox hill to be precise. You guys, need to know that back then in the olden days there weren't as much of opportunities as in today. Ernest grew up with nothing yet by hard work and concentration on studies, he achieved world fame. And so can you.

How did this bright kiwi got so smart?
Well, he studied at Havelock School and was lucky to be taught by a country- teacher who was above average ability. In 1887 Ernest, won a scholarship to Nelson College. Ernest studied three years at Nelson College, and once again, won a scholarship to any university of his choice in New Zealand. During university, Ernest got a Master of Arts degree with Double First Class Honours, in mathematics and mathematical physics and physical science.

Is he still alive?
Unfortunately Ernest isn’t alive. He died 19th October 1937 at the age of 66. His ashes are laid at the London’s Westminster under a flagstone. But he’s not alone. JJ Newton was later with him and so are other greats of British science.

I chose Ernest Rutherford for my inspirational person because he had a gift of great knowledge. While he was growing up, he was surrounded by hard workers. Those hard workers must have rubbed on Ernest. Also he did a lot of studying, which makes me want to go to university and study heaps.

Socialising with schools

A game to remember

Walt: write a narrative.
A game to remember

Screams of the schools cheers filled the auditorium. Perspiration dripped from the children'sfaces. The pressure to win was getting heavier and heavier. It’s close game. A really close game. It was 14 to 12. GI was down two points. Weymouth had 14 points. That was a perfect final.

Bounce. Bounce. Pass. Shoot. Another goal for Weymouth. What a surprise! With such skill  they’re bound to win. The pressure for GI to win was getting even greater now. The doubts of losing were flowing into the GI girls’ minds. But the doubts then were turned into fuel to win. Another pass, bounce and SHOOT. Finally, a goal for GI. GI students roared and cheered even louder. So loud that we couldn’t hear Weymouth cheer at all. The GI players spirits were lifted.

BOOM! Silence. I think someone fell. Oh yes, a tall girl from GI. She’s crying and a coach is carrying her off the court. It seemed that a Weymouth girl ‘accidently pushed her’. The players on the court felt pity for her. SHOOT! What was that! Surprise, surprise. Weymouth got another goal, this is not good sign. Now GIs’ coach is belching out commands “ protect the goal, “or “get into space, stop bunching up.”

One minute is left, the girls’ faces are scrunched as if it were made of paper. Concentration was high. The referee lifted the ball and . . . . . DROP! Weymouth snatched the ball. They bounced the ball, fifty three seconds left. They passed it, forty eight seconds left. OH-NO! GI just stole the ball, thirty two seconds left. Bounce, bounce twenty five seconds left. They passed, seventeen seconds now. Running to the goal, 6 5 4 3 2. . . . . . . . . a goal for GI. HOORAY! GI has won. I repeat GI has won. And the crowd goes wild. GI walked out of the courts with such elation that they looked like they were flying. Smiles and handshakes followed.

Spinning Probability

Walt: solve statistics problem.

This activity was very complex. I found this was a little bit difficult. I think I need more practise on this particular part of maths, if I need to get to the next level in Maths. My teacher made a good decision putting this game on our classroom site.

Fine Candies

Walt: solve statistics problem.

This game was easy peasy. The aim of the game is to feed the people with the right amount of candy. There was absolutely nothing in this game that was difficult. What I would like to learn next is the same like this but with bigger numbers.

Probability

Walt: solve the problem.

This activity was simple. It was easy because all you had to do was to look which coloured blocks shows the most. There was nothing challenging about this game. What I would would like to practise more on is box and whiskers.

Walt: Exploring probability

This activity was pretty simple actually. All I had to do was was roll dice and record it on the spreadsheet. It was not hard at all.

Box and whiskers

Walt: solve the problem.

I didn’t know what box and whiskers was, until I played this game. At first I struggled to understand what was the percentage for and weird figure shown above. But after awhile I got used to it a little bit. I still need more practising on this box and whiskers.

Valentine

Walt: discuss the problems and solutions in sequence.
Valentine

The first problem Robbie thought that Karen didn’t like him therefore didn’t want to be his valentine. Robbie realised this when he saw Karen with a boy named Brett Harvey, who was really cool and popular were talking. He could not believe it, he thought that she was crazy. Robbie saw that Karen was grinning and knew that there was something more than a conversation.

At the end of the day, Karen was at the stop waiting. Robbie just came across her, so he decided to walk home instead of going on the bus. The reason is that Robbie just didn’t want to see her after that declaration in class with Brett. But Karen gave Robbie an envelope. And inside was a card saying, “ To Robbie, happy valentine ”. Robbie was completely gob smacked.

Milk in schools

Walt: share my thoughts on “milk in schools”.
Milk in schools

I believe that children do need milk. Milk, is considered one of the world’s most “complete foods” and also the richest source of calcium. Calcium is great to keep the bones strong and healthy. Also it’s other health benefits is, it’s great for the teeth because it does not cause tooth decay therefore is a great drink for in between meals. You got to do the best for a child so that particular child could grow to be a healthy adult.

I strongly believe that the government shouldn't responsible for supplying children with milk. The government is not responsible for children PARENTS are. Children are the parents number one priority under any circumstances. When parents have a child they commit themselves to clothe, feed and love that child for it’s whole life.

In conclusion, governments shouldn't be responsible for supplying children milk in low decile schools. Parents number one responsibility is their children.

Cross country

Walt: write a rap/poem.

Cross country

Once again it is here
Oh my gosh oh dear
This tiring sport known as ‘cross country’
makes me feel so angry

You are so nasty, naughty in every single way
Almost as hard as an essay
You are so long, muddy and full of junk
You’re just a big fat punk

Your figure is so strange
Isn’t it such a strain?
You make kids sweaty and smelly
But you’re good for the belly

You make my legs ache so badly
That I cry sometimes so sadly
My arms jiggle and wiggle
Just looking at it makes me giggle
